Merit Board

Allen County Merit Board
The Allen County Sheriff’s Merit Board is established under Indiana Code 36-8-10-3 and plays a vital role in maintaining fairness, accountability, and transparency in personnel matters concerning merit deputies.
The board consists of five members: three appointed by the Sheriff and two elected by majority vote of the merit deputies. The Merit Board is responsible for the oversight of hiring, termination, demotion, and serious disciplinary actions involving merit officers (excluding those on probation). Additionally, the board oversees pension and disability plans for all merit deputies.
The Merit Board meets regularly to discuss and act on matters impacting the welfare and professionalism of the department. This system ensures high standards in hiring, promotes equitable treatment, and provides accountability for personnel decisions—regardless of changes in leadership.
