Chief Deputy Troy Hershberger has over 31 years of experience with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department. He has served as the Deputy Chief of the Administrative Division since April of 2020, until becoming Chief Deputy. His duties consisted of maintaining the Warrants & Fugitive Division, Civil Division, Sex Offender Registry, Human Resources, Bureau of Identification, Internal Affairs, Office of Public Information, and Comptroller.
From January of 2015 thru April of 2020, Chief Deputy Hershberger maintained the Sheriff’s Department Operations Division, where he supervised the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigation, Crime Scene, School Resource Officers, Community Resource Officers, Field Services, and Information and Technology. He was the Lieutenant of Internal Affairs for 2 years, and Commander of Criminal Investigations from July 2006, to January 2013.
Sheriff Hershberger has also held the position of Sergeant in the Patrol Division, Investigator/Detective, and Patrol Officer. He began his long-running career in 1989 at the Allen County Confinement Facility.
Throughout his 31-year career with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Sheriff Hershberger has served as a Polygraphist for 18 years, SWAT team member for 12 years, Bomb Squad Technician for 11 years, and K-9 Handler/Officer for 6 years.
In the last 4 years, Sheriff Hershberger has advocated creating 18 new positions while working closely with the school districts and administration. 11 of the 18 positions were approved for School Resource Officers to help ensure the safety and security of our school systems.
A new bike patrol was implemented in the summer of 2019. 4 bike officers patrol our trail system, and county parks, for the continued safety and security of our community.
Luke Bryan Farm Tour, the largest Allen County concert, bringing in over 20,000 citizens from several surrounding areas, was organized and maintained by Sheriff Hershberger for 3 consecutive years. This included site location selection, maintaining the safety and security of thousands of people, and logistical traffic coordination with several agencies.
Sheriff Hershberger definitely understands the importance of community, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Alcohol Abuse Deterrent Program, the advisory board for Great Kids Make Great Communities, Dr. Bill Lewis Center for Children, YMCA Youth Services Bureau, and Crime Stoppers.
Formerly Sheriff Hershberger has served on the YWCA of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau, the Mayor’s Commission on Domestic Violence, Rape and Sexual Harassment, Allen County’s Child Death Review Team, Child Protection Team of Allen county, and Allen County School Safely Commission.
