Officer Pulls Crash Victim from Sinking Car

The Allen County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a single vehicle crash that occurred in a pond off of State Road 1, north of Popp Road.  At approximately 4:20p.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2016, dispatch received a call of a vehicle that flipped upside down and broke through the ice of a frozen pond.  Officer Kenneth Litzenberg responded to the scene and observed James Graham and several witnesses holding onto the vehicle attempting to stop it from sinking and sliding further into the pond.  Officer Litzenberg retrieved a crowbar from the trunk of his vehicle, and immediately entered the icy water in an attempt to extract the driver who was trapped in the vehicle.  After breaking the rear driver’s side window, Officer Litzenberg, with the assistance of Mr. Graham, was able to pull the driver from the vehicle and get him to the shore.  Medics arrived and treated the driver at the scene for minor injuries sustained from the crash.  Officer Litzenberg was also treated for minor cuts to his hands at the scene.  The crash remains under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
