Man Wanted for Attempted Murder in Allen County Arrested in Virginia

DETAILS:   On June 10, 2007, at 2:46 a.m. Allen County Communications received a call in reference to a fight/stabbing at the Country Spirits Bar located at

11517 Arcola Road
.  Upon arrival of the initial officers it was determined that Charles A. Minnix, M/W/42, had received cuts to his right arm, neck, under his left arm/back, and left hand.  Mr. Minnix was flown from the scene to Parkview Hospital by Lutheran air in critical condition.  After interviewing witnesses at the scene Allen County Sheriff’s officers arrested David Lee Stapleton, M/W/45, Fort Wayne, as he was arriving home in the 5300 block of Stonehedge after the attack.  Mr. Stapleton was booked into the Allen County Lock-Up for aggravated battery with a $10,000.00 bond.  Mr. Stapleton bonded out and was re-arrested in court with a $25,000.00 bond.  Again, Mr. Stapleton bonded out and the charges were upgraded to attempted murder with a $50,000.00 bond.  Mr. Stapleton did not return to court on June 25, 2007, for his scheduled hearing and an arrest warrant for attempted murder was issued.

On June 24, 2007, Mr. Stapleton was arrested by the Blue Ridge Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team in Lee County, Virginia.  Deputy U.S. Marshal Brent Cooper (Northern District of Indiana) stationed in Fort Wayne, lead the investigation and coordinated the critical assistance which was provided by Deputy U.S. Marshal Matt Davis (Western District of Virginia), Investigator W.C. Darnell (Wise County Virginia Sheriff’s Office), Deputy U.S. Marshals from (Virginia, and Florida), the Wise County Virginia Sheriff’s Office, the Lee County Virginia Sheriffs Office, the Washington County Virginia Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia State Police.  Mr. Stapleton was apprehended without incident after he walked from a wooded tree line to a vehicle that he thought was being driven by his girlfriend.  The vehicle was actually being driven by a Wise County Sheriff’s officer and had a Virginia State Police officer and his K-9 partner hiding in the passenger compartment.  Mr. Stapleton was arraigned in the Lee County General District Court this morning.
