Sheriff Kenneth C. Fries and the Allen County Sheriff’s Department have received the first LEADership Award for proactive efforts in confronting substance abuse issues facing the families of Allen County.  The award was presented by TDS (Total Diagnostic Systems) Incorporated.  TDS, Inc. manufactures individual drug testing kits.  TDS has received e-mails and phone calls from parents in Allen County indicating how well received and invaluable the L.E.A.D. teams work has been and continues to be.

Spearheaded by Detective Corporal John Zaglemeier of the Allen County Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigations Division and Captain Rich Beck, an Allen County Reserve police officer, the Sheriff’s Department’s START (Sheriff’s Teen Alcohol Reduction Team) began participating in the LEAD (Law Enforcement Against Drugs) program in April of 2006.  The LEAD program is designed to help parents address the issue of drug use and provides in-home drug testing kits at a minimal cost.  Individual kits can be obtained to test for alcohol, marijuana, ecstasy and cocaine, for $5.00 each, or a multi-test kit will test for the presence of cocaine, marijuana, opiates and methamphetamines for $15.00.  Each kit is accompanied with directions for test administering and result information.  Literature with local resources for substance abuse is also included.  Kits can be purchased anonymously at the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, located at 12535 Lima Road, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, the Southwest Allen County Schools Administrative Offices, Heritage High School, and Bishop Dwenger High School.  To date 2,369 drug testing kits have been sold in Allen County.
